Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the animated feature The LEGO Batman Movie directed by Chris McKay and featuring the voices of Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Jenny Slate and Ralph Fiennes. The film’s original music is composed by Lorne Balfe (Terminator Genisys, Home, Penguins of Madagascar, 13 Hours). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by DNCE, Cutting Crew, Patrick Stump, Alesso feat. Also opening wide is the action sequel John Wick: Chapter 2 directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Common, Riccardo Scamarcio, Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, Bridget Moynahan, Lance Roddick, Franco Nero, John Leguizamo and Ian McShane. Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, 300) and Joel J. Richard (Quantico) have composed the film’s original music. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack featuring the composers’ score, as well as tracks by Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, Ciscandra Nostalghia and Le Castle Vania. The third wide release this week is the drama Fifty Shades Darker directed by James Foley and starring Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Rita Ora, Kim Basinger and Marcia Gay Harden. Republic Records has released a soundtrack featuring the songs from the movie by artists including ZAYN & Taylor Swift, Halsey, Tove Lo, Sia, Kygo, The-Dream, John Legend, Nicki Minaj, Nick Jonas & more. Opening in limited release is the romantic drama A United Kingdom directed by Amma Asante and starring David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, Jack Davenport, Terry Pheto, Tom Felton, Arnold Oceng, Jack Lowden and Laura Carmichael. Patrick Doyle (Sense and Sensibility, Cinderella, Thor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in limited release is the Danish drama Land of Mine written and directed by Martin Zandvliet and starring Roland Moller, Mikkel Boe Folsgaard, Louis Hofmann, Joel Basman, Emil Belton and Oskar Belton. The film’s original music is composed by Sune Martin (Teddy Bear, Applause). No word on a soundtrack release. Land of Mine follows a group of German POWs who are made the enemy of a nation, where they are now forced to dig up 2 million land-mines with their bare hands. The drama, which is one of the five nominees in the Foreign Language Film category at this year’s Academy Awards, premiered at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival and is being released stateside by Sony Pictures Classics. Also opening in select theaters is the crime drama Stray Bullets written and directed by Jack Fessenden and stars Asa Spurlock, James Le Gros, John Speredakos, Kevin Corrigan, Robert Burke Warren and Larry Fessenden. The director has also composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the filmmaker’s score. Also opening in select cities is the mockumentary David Brent: Life on the Road written and directed by Ricky Gervais who also stars in the movie alongside Ben Bailey Smith, Doc Brown, Andy Burrows, Tom Basden, Nina Sosanya,Tom Bennett and Andrew Brooke. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Juxtaposition Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film performed by Gervais’ title character & Foregone Conclusion, including a collaboration with Chris Martin of Coldplay last summer when the movie opened in the UK.
