Max Richter has composed the music for the upcoming drama The Sense of an Ending. The film is directed by Ritesh Batra and stars Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Michelle Dockery, Emily Mortimer, Harriet Walter and Edward Holcroft. The movie is based on Julian Barnes’ Man Booker Prize-winning novel of the same title and follows a man who becomes haunted by his past and is presented with a mysterious legacy that causes him to re-think his current situation in life. Nick Payne has written the screenplay. Ed Rubin and David Thompson (Woman in Gold, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) are producing the project. Richter has previously scored Batra’s first feature, The Lunchbox. No release date has been announced yet for The Sense of an Ending.
Richter’s upcoming projects also include John Madden’s Miss Sloane starring Jessica Chastain, as well as the third season of HBO’s The Leftovers. He is also scoring the upcoming FX original mini-series Taboo. The show is created by Steven Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things) and stars Tom Hardy, Oona Chaplin, David Hayman, Michael Kelly and Jonathan Pryce. The drama follows an adventurer who returns to Britain from Africa along with 14 stolen diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Knight and Hardy are also executive producing the project with Kate Crowe (Labyrinth) & Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Alien, The Martian) for his production company Scott Free and Dean Baker. Richter has previously scored the Scott Free-produced feature Morgan. Taboo is set to premiere in early 2017 on FX in the U.S. and on BBC One in the UK.
