Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the superhero movie Suicide Squad directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Karen Fukuhara and Viola Davis. The film’s original music is composed by Steven Price (Gravity, The World’s End, Fury). WaterTower Music will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score this coming Monday. Also opening wide is the family comedy Nine Lives directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Garner, Malina Weissman, Cheryl Hines, Christopher Walken and Robbie Amell. Evgueni & Sacha Galperine (The Family, The Past, Madame Bovary) have composed the film’s original music. EuropaCorp has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as the song Three Cool Cats by The Coasters. Opening in New York before expanding to more markets over the next couple of weeks is the indie drama Little Men written and directed by Ira Sachs and starring Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Ehle, Paulina Garcia, Theo Taplitz and Michael Barbieri. The film’s original music is composed by Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Bone, Locke, Out of the Furnace, Last Chance Harvey). No soundtrack album has been released, but check out eight tracks from the score on Soundcloud. The movie, which is set in Brooklyn and follows a two boys whose bond is tested by their parents’ battle over a dress shop lease, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Magnolia Pictures. Also opening in limited release is the documentary Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny directed by Louis Black & Karen Bernstein about director Richard Linklater’s life and work. Graham Reynolds (Bernie, Before Midnight, A Scanner Darkly) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in select theaters is the drama Five Nights in Maine written and directed by Maris Curran and starring David Oyelowo, Dianne Wiest, Rosie Perez, Teyonah Parris and Hani Furstenberg. The film’s original music is composed by David Boulter. No word on a soundtrack album. Five Nights in Maine follows a young African American man, reeling from the tragic loss of his wife, who travels to rural Maine to seek answers from his estranged mother-in-law. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released in select theaters and on VOD by FilmRise. Visit the official movie website for more information.
Another limited release this week is the comedy Amateur Night written and directed by Lisa Addario & Joe Syracuse and starring Jason Biggs, Janet Montgomery, Jenny Mollen, Bria Murphy and Ashley Tisdale. The Newton Brothers (Oculus, Before I Wake, Life of Crime, Detachment) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie follows an out-of-work expectant father desperate to find a job to support his growing family who ends up as the driver for three charismatic call girls as they make their evening rounds. The film is being released in theaters and on VOD by Cinedigm.
Also opening in select cities is the horror thriller The Remains written and directed by Thomas Della Bella and starring Todd Lowe, Samuel Larsen, Nikki Hahn, Lisa Brenner, Brooke Butler and Ashley Crow. The film’s original music is composed by Giona Ostinelli (Carnage Park, Two-Bit Waltz, Darling). No word on a soundtrack release. The Remains follows a family who moves into an old Victorian home, where they discover a chest in the attic containing antiques tainted by a malevolent spirits. The movie is being released by Vertical Entertainment.
