Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water directed by Paul Tibbitt and featuring the voices of Antonio Banderas, Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence and Douglas Lawrence. Columbia Records has released a soundtrack featuring five songs from the film. Visit Amazon to download the release. The movie’s original score is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf, Bruce Almighty). No word yet on a release of the composer’s music. Also opening wide is the sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending written and directed by Andy & Lana Wachowski and starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne and Douglas Booth. Michael Giacchino (Lost, Star Trek, Up, Ratatouille, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) has composed the film’s original score. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. The third wide release of the week is the fantasy adventure Seventh Son directed by Sergei Bodrov and starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Olivia Williams, Antje Traue, Djimon Hounsou and Julianne Moore. The film’s original music is composed by Marco Beltrami (Scream, The Wolverine, 3:10 to Yuma, World War Z, Live Free or Die Hard). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Seventh Son follows a teen who’s the seventh son of a seventh son, and who learns about wizardry from a forbidding spook. Opening in limited release is the horror thriller Enter the Dangerous Mind directed by Youssef Delara & Victor Teran and starring Jake Hoffman, Nikki Reed, Thomas Dekker, Jason Priestly, Scott Bakula and Gina Rodriguez. Reza Safinia (Filly Brown, Mercy) has composed the film’s original score and also contributed two original songs. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack featuring both score on songs next Tuesday, February 10. Also opening in select cities is the dark comedy The Voices directed by Marjane Satrapi and starring Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick and Jacki Weaver. The film’s original score is composed by Olivier Bernet who previously collaborated with the director on the animated feature Persepolis and the comedy drama Chicken with Plums. The movie also features an original musical number during the comedy’s end credits sequence produced by Bernet. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The Voices centers around a lovable but disturbed factory worker with an evil talking cat and a benevolent talking dog. The movie premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Lionsgate.
Another limited release this week is the romantic comedy Love, Rosie directed by Christian Ditter ands starring Sam Claflin, Lilly Collins, Christian Cooke, Tamsin Egerton, Suki Waterhouse, Jamie Beamish and Jaime Winstone. The film’s original score is composed by Ralf Wengenmayr (Manitou’s Shoe) who who previously scored the director’s feature Vicky and the Treasure of the Gods. Königskinder Records has released a soundtrack album featuring selections from the score, as well as songs by Elton John, Kate Nash, Elliot Smith, Peggy Lee, Gilbert O’Sullivan & more overseas. Also opening in select markets is the fantasy adventure Outcast directed by Nicholas Powell and starring Nicolas Cage, Hayden Christensen and Yifei Liu. Guillaume Roussel (3 Days to Kill, Crossing Lines, It Boy) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Outcast is set in the 12th Century and follows two European Crusaders who chose to wander off toward western China, where they become entangled in romance and antagonism with local royalty. The movie is being released in the U.S. by Entertainment One and is now also available on VOD.
