The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is the music-themed drama The Identical directed by Dustin Marcellino and starring Erin Cottrell, Amanda Crew, Brian Geraghty, Seth Green, Ashley Judd, Joe Pantoliano, Blake Rayne, and Ray Liotta. Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean, Constantine, Rescue Dawn) and Christopher Carmichael have composed the film’s original score. City of Peace Media and Capitol Christian Distribution have released a soundtrack album featuring five tracks from the composers’ score, as well as the songs from the film performed by lead actor Blake Rayne, The Morph Kings and Darcey & Mo. Opening in limited release is the indie comedy drama Kelly & Cal directed by Jen McGowan and starring Juliette Lewis, Cybill Shepherd and Jonny Weston. The film’s original music is composed by Toby Chu (Covert Affairs, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return). No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie centers on the relationship between a suburban-trapped mother and a wheelchair-bound young man who brings out her former self. The dramedy premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and was picked up by IFC Films for domestic distribution. Also opening in select cities is the indie musical drama God Help the Girl written and directed by Belle & Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch, produced by Barry Mendel and starring Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray. Murdoch has also written the film’s original music, including three original songs. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs, selections from the score, as well as the original version of Belle and Sebastian’s Dress Up in You. Another limited release this week is the drama Frontera co-written and directed by Michael Berry and starring Ed Harris, Eva Longoria, Michael Pena and Amy Madigan. Kenneth Lampl and Darren Tate have composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release, but check out two tracks from the score on The Playlist. Frontera is set in the border area between the U.S. and Mexico and follows a man who crosses the border illegally for work and finds himself wrongfully accused of murdering the wife of a former sheriff. Also opening in limited release is the supernatural thriller The Remaining directed by Casey La Scala and starring Alexa Vega, Italia Ricci, Johnny Pacar, Shaun Sipos, Bryan Dechart, Liz E. Morgan and John Pyper-Ferguson. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Whitehead (The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy). No soundtrack album has been announced. The Remaining follows a group of close friends who gather for a wedding, but the celebration is shattered by a series of cataclysmic events and enemies foretold by biblical end-times prophecies. The Longest Week follows an heir to a hotel fortune who is cut off from his allowance following his parents’ abrupt divorce and is taken in by his old friend and immediately falls for his girlfriend.
