Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2 directed by Dean DeBlois and featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig. John Powell (The Bourne Trilogy, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Rio) has composed the film’s original music. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the original song Where No One Goes by Jónsi. Also opening wide is the action comedy sequel 22 Jump Street directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, Peter Stormare, Craig Roberts, Amber Stevens, Jillian Bell and Wyatt Russell. The film’s original score is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh (The Lego Movie, The Royal Tenenbaums, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs). Casablanca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by Angel Haze feat. Opening in limited release is the Australian thriller The Rover written and directed by David Michod and starring Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy, David Field, Anthony Hayes, Gillian Jones and Susan Prior. Antony Partos who previously scored the director’s last feature Animal Kingdom has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. The Rover follows a loner traveling in the desolate Australian outback, where a gang of thieves steal his car and leave behind a wounded member who is forced to help track down the gang. The thriller premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by A24 Films. To learn more about the film, visit the official movie website.
Also opening in limited release is the sci-fi thriller The Signal directed by William Eubank and stars Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, Laurence Fishburne, Lin Shaye, Robert Longstreet and Jeffrey Grover. The film’s original music is composed by Nima Fakhrara (Exists, The Courier). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song 2.3.5.41, which he wrote with hip hop producer Free the Robots. Also opening in select cities is the indie drama Hellion written and directed by Kat Candler and starring Aaron Paul, Juliette Lewis and Josh Wiggins. Curtis Heath has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Hellion follows a hard-drinking Texas single dad who struggles to raise his two boys, including rebellious teenager Jacob who finds release in the high-risk, white-knuckle world of motocross. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by IFC Films for domestic distribution. To learn more about the film, visit the official movie website.
Another limited release this weekend is the horror comedy All Cheerleaders Die written and directed by Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson and starring Caitlin Stasey, Sianoa Smit-McPhee, Brooke Butler, Amanda Grace Cooper, Reanin Johannink and Tom Williamson. Mads Heldtberg (You’re Next, Cheap Thrills) has composed the film’s original score. Modern Distributors has released a soundtrack album featuring four tracks from the composer’s music, as well as songs by All Day, A Giant Dog, Sean Spillane, Shay Astar, Mini Death and more. Also opening in limited release is the indie comedy drama Lullaby written and directed by Andrew Levitas and starring Garrett Hedlund, Richard Jenkins, Amy Adams, Jessica Brown Findlay, Anne Archer, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson and Jessica Barden. The film’s original music is composed by Patrick Leonard (At Close Range, Nothing in Common, With Honors). No soundtrack album has been announced. Also opening in select markets is the Spanish horror comedy Witching & Bitching directed by Alex de la Iglesia and starring Hugo Silva, Mario Casas, Carmen Maura and Pepón Nieto. Joan Valent (As Luck Would Have It) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score was released digitally earlier this week. Another limited release is the German drama A Coffee in Berlin (Oh Boy) written and directed by Jan Ole Gerster and starring Tom Schilling, Friederike Kempter, Marc Hosemann, Katharina Schüttler, Justusvon Dohnányi, Andreas Schröders, Arnd Klawitter, Martin Brambach, Frederick Lau and Ulrich Noethen. The Major Minors and Cherilyn MacNeil have written the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album for the movie.
