Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the docudrama Captain Phillips directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, United 93) and starring Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman, Faysal Ahmed, Mahat M. Ali, Michael Chernus, Corey Johnson and Max Martini. The film’s music is composed by Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class, Wreck-It-Ralph). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album for the film featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Also opening wide is the action sequel Machete Kills written and directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir and Mel Gibson. The film’s music is composed by Rodriguez himself and Carl Thiel (Grindhouse: Planet Terror, Shorts). Morada Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as an original end title track by Tito & Tarantula (From Dusk Till Dawn) and two tracks by Chingon. Opening in limited release is the romantic drama Romeo & Juliet based on William Shakespeare’s play, directed by Carlo Carlei and starring Douglas Booth, Hailee Steinfeld, Damian Lewis, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ed Westwick, Stellan Skarsgard and Paul Giamatti. Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man, W.E., Battle of Terra) has composed the film’s original music. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the Golden Globe-nominated composer’s score digitally earlier this week. Abel Korzeniowski also has scored second film to be released in limited release this weekend: Escape from Tomorrow is written and directed by Randy Moore and stars Roy Abramsohn, Elena Schuber, Katelynn Rodriguez, Annet Mahendru, Danielle Safady and Alison Lees-Taylor. The composer who has recorded his score at thrEastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros. Studios. released a soundtrack album on his own label earlier this year. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete directed by George Tillman, Jr. and starring Jennifer Hudson, Anthony Mackie, Jordin Sparks, Jeffrey Wright, Skylan Brooks, Ethan Dizon, Julito McCullum and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The film’s original score is composed by Alicia Keys who makes her film scoring debut on the project and Mark Isham (Crash, Once Upon a Time, A River Runs Through It). No soundtrack album has been announced. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by Lionsgate’s Codeblack label. Also opening in select cities is the music-themed drama CBGB directed by Randall Miller and starring Alan Rickman, Malin Akerman, Ashley Greene, Johnny Galecki, Rupert Grint, Justin Bartha, Joel David Moore, Freddy Rodriguez, Donal Logue, Stana Katic and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters. Omnivore Recordings has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Talking Heads, New York Dolls, Television, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, The Velvet Underground, The Dictators, Blondie and The Police. Another limited release this week is the western Sweetwater directed by Logan & Noah Miller and starring Ed Harris, January Jones, Jason Isaacs, Eduardo Noriega, Jason Aldean and Stephen Root. The film’s original score is composed by Martin Davich (ER, Beverly Hills, 90210) who previously scored the directors’ 2008 movie Touching Home. No soundtrack album has been announced. The film about fanatical religious leader, a renegade Sheriff, and a former prostitute who collide in a blood triangle in New Mexico premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up for domestic distribution by ARC Entertainment.
