Three new movies are opening wide this week:
Already in theaters since Wednesday is the thriller Closed Circuit directed by John Crowley and starring Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, Riz Ahmed, Jim Broadbent, Kenneth Cranham, Anne-Marie Duff, Ciarán Hinds and Julia Stiles. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally earlier this week. Opening wide today is the concert documentary One Direction: This Is Us directed by Morgan Spurlock about the British/Irish boy band One Direction, consisting of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. Simon Franglen who collaborated with James Horner on his scores for Avatar, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Karate Kid has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been released, but the songs featured in the film are available on the band’s records. Also opening wide is the action thriller Getaway directed by Courtney Solomon and starring Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez, Jon Voight, Rebecca Budig and Bruce Payne. The film’s original score is composed by Justin Burnett (Dungeons & Dragons, Java Heat). Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack featuring the composer’s music, as well as the original song Sing Now performed by Allison Beal and written by Beal and Burnett on September 3. Opening in limited release is the comedy Instructions Not Included directed by Eugenio Derbez and starring Eugenio Derbez, Loreto Perlalta, Jessica Lindsey, Alessandra Rosaldo and Sammy Pérez. Carlo Siliotto (The Punisher, Under the Same Moon, Fluke) has composed the film’s score. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie follows a man who has made a new life for himself and the daughter left on his doorstep 6 years ago who finds his family threatened when the birth mother resurfaces. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to other markets next month is the indie comedy drama Afternoon Delight written and directed by Jill Solloway and starring Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor, Jessica St. Clair, Michaela Watkins, Josh Stamberg and Jane Lynch. The film’s original score is composed by Craig Wedren (Role Models, The School of Rock). No word on a soundtrack release. Afternoon Delight follows a stay-at-home mom who rescues a stripper by taking her in as a live-in nanny. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it won the Best Director award and was picked up by The Film Arcade for a theatrical release. Also opening in select cities is the thriller Passion directed by Brian De Palma and starring Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace. Pino Donaggio who previously worked with the director on such films as Body Double, Dressed to Kill and Carrie composed the film’s score. Also opening in limited release is the comedy drama The Lifeguard directed by Liz W. Garcia and starring Kristen Bell, Mamie Gummer, Martin Starr, David Lambert, Joshua Harto and Amy Madigan. The film’s original music is composed by Fred Avril (Sound of Noise). No soundtrack has been released, but numerous tracks are available to stream on the composer’s Soundcloud page. The Lifeguard follows a woman in New York who sees her career and love life crash down, flees to her hometown and regresses back into high school life.. The comedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up for domestic distribution by Screen Media and Focus World. Opening in Los Angeles following a release in New York last week is the indie comedy Drinking Buddies directed by Joe Swanberg and starring Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick. The film doesn’t feature an original score. Chris Swanson serves as the project’s music supervisor. Drinking Buddies follows a pair of Chicago craft brewery co-workers whose platonic friendship veers toward flirtation. The movie premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and was acquired by Magnolia Pictures for US distribution. Also receiving a limited theatrical release ahead of its home video release next month is the heist drama Empire State directed by Dito Montiel and starring Liam Hemsworth, Dwayne Johnson, Emma Roberts, Nikki Reed, Chris Diamantopoulos, Michael Angarano and Jerry Ferrara. The film’s original score is composed by David Wittman (Fighting, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints).
