Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve directed by Garry Marshall and starring Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Robert De Niro, Sofia Vergara, Jon Bon Jovi, Hilary Swank, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Josh Duhamel, Seth Meyers, Hector Elizondo, Abigail Breslin, Michelle Pfeiffer and Katherine Heigl. John Debney has written movie’s score, but no score album has been released so far. Also opening wide is the comedy The Sitter directed by David Gordon Green and starring Jonah Hill, Sam Rockwell, Ari Grayner, Erin Daniels, Jessica Hecht and Method Man. The film’s score is written by David Wingo and Jeff McIlwain. A soundtrack album featuring one track from the score, as well as the songs from the movie by artists including The Sugarhill Gang, Slick Rick, Cluts, Pharcyde, The Jungle Brothers and Raphael Saadiq has been released on Sony Music earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the thriller Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy directed by Tomas Alfredson and starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Stephen Graham and Benedict Cumberbatch. The film’s music is composed by Alberto Iglesias who is considered to be one of the top contenders to receive an Academy Award nomination for his score. Also opening in select cities is the dramedy Young Adult directed by Jason Reitman and starring Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser and Patton Oswalt. Rolfe Kent has written the score for the movie. Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring one track by Kent, as well as songs by Diana Ross, 4 Non Blondes, The Replacements, Lemonheads, Veruca Salt, Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, Dinosaur Jr. and Suicidal Tendencies and five instrumental versions of classic songs by Mateo Messina. Another limited release this week is the indie drama I Melt With You directed by Mark Pellington and starring Jeremy Piven, Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Christian McKay and Carlo Gugino. The film’s score is written by tomandandy. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack featuring one score track by the composer duo, as well as songs by artists including Big Dipper, Filter, The Pixies, Galaxie 500, The Specials, Funkadelics, Love and Rockets and Modern English. Opening in Los Angeles for an awards-qualifying run is the indie drama We Need to Talk About Kevin directed by Lynne Ramsay and starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller. Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood) has written the score for the movie. No soundtrack album announcement has been made. Also receiving a limited Oscar-qualifying run this weekend is the romantic drama W.E. directed by Madonna and starring Abbie Cornish, Natalie Dormer, Richard Coyle, Oscar Isaac and James D’Arcy. Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man) has written the movie’s score. The composer has announced that a soundtrack album featuring his music will be released in 2012, but the full details have yet to be announced. Check back on this page for updates on the release.
