Christopher Lennertz has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming crime comedy The Happytime Murders. The film is directed by Brian Henson and stars Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks. The movie follows two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human and one puppet, who are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show. Todd Berger has written the screenplay based on a story by himself & Dee Austin Robertson. Henson is also producing the project with Jeff Hayes (It’s a Disaster), McCarthy & Ben Falcone. Lennertz has previously scored the Falcone-directed feature The Boss starring McCarthy. Rupert Gregson-Williams was originally scoring the movie as reported last year. The Happytime Murders is set to be released on August 17, 2018 by STX Entertainment.
Lennertz’s upcoming feature projects also include Tim Story’s Shaft sequel, Charles Stone III’s Uncle Drew and Tim Hill’s The War with Grandpa. He also continues to score Netflix’s Lost in Space, which will return for a second season next year and the CW’s Supernatural, which is coming back for a fourteenth season this fall.
Admittedly, Lennertz is probably the better choice for this kind of film. But, I do wonder what happened to Williams.
