Rhino Records will release a new soundtrack album for the 1992 epic historical drama 1492: Conquest of Paradise directed by Ridley Scott and starring Gérard Depardieu, Armand Assante and Sigourney Weaver. The Expanded Edition features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Vangelis (Chariots of Fire, Blade Runer, Alexander, The Bounty), including two bonus tracks (Line Open & Landscape), which have previously been released as part of the Conquest of Paradise single, but were not included on the original soundtrack album. The soundtrack will be released digitally, on CD and as a double LP on Yellow Flame marble vinyl, housed in a gloss-laminated outer sleeve, on August 29. Weekly Film Music Roundup (April 28, 2023)
Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s classic novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig and starring Abby Ryder Fortson, Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates. The film’s original music is composed by Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, Dune, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Inception). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Also opening wide is the biographical drama Big George Foreman directed by George Tillman Jr. and starring Khris Davis, Jasmine Mathews, Sullivan Jones, John Magaro, Lawrence Gilliard Jr. and Sonja Sohn. Marcelo Zarvos (Fences, Emancipation, The Affair, Wonder, Enough Said, The Good Shepherd, Ray Donovan) has composed the film’s original music. Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Vangelis (1943 – 2022)
Vangelis (born as Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou) has passed away at age 79 in France. The Greek composer has scored numerous films, including Hugh Hudson’s 1981 drama Chariots of Fire, for which he won the Academy Award and also received a Grammy Award nomination, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, for which he was BAFTA- and Golden Globe-nominated and Scott’s 1492: Conquest of Paradise, for which he earned another Golden Globe nomination. His other film scoring credits include Costa-Gavras’ Missing, Koreyoshi Kurahara’s Antarctica, Roger Donaldson’s The Bounty, Roman Polanski’s Bitter Moon and Oliver Stone’s Alexander.
