ComingSoon.net is reporting that Michael Giacchino has confirmed that he will be returning to score the upcoming (currently untitled) Star Trek sequel. The assignment was expected as the composer has previously scored all of director J.J. Abrams’ previous movies, including the first Star Trek film in 2009. All primary cast members are expected to return for the sequel, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. Abrams is co-writing the script with Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Transformers). It has also just been announced that the movie will be shot in 3D and has been set for a release on May 17, 2013. Giacchino has been doing a lot of press in the last couple of days about his score for Super 8, which has been released on Blu-Ray and DVD this past Tuesday. Check out an interview on Crave Online, in which talks about his most recent collaboration with Abrams, as well as his other upcoming projects Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and John Carter.
