The Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced three programs to take place in August that will highlight the art of film music. On Wednesday, August 17, Academy governor Michael Giacchino (Up, Star Trek, Inside Out) and animation director David Silverman will host the West Coast restoration premiere of the 1930 classic King of Jazz at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. On Monday, August 29, the Academy will celebrate the life and legacy of Prince with a screening of Purple Rain in 35mm, also at the organization’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Prince (1958 – 2016)
Singer/songwriter/composer Prince has passed away at age 57 at his Paisley Park recording studio and home in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Among his film music credits was the 1984 musical Purple Rain, for which he composed the score, which received the Academy Award in the Best Original Song Score category, as well as a Grammy Award. He also contributed several songs to the film, including the track When Doves Cry, which was nominated for a Golden Globe. His other work for film include the soundtrack for Tim Burton’s 1989 feature Batman, for which he wrote numerous songs and received a Grammy nomination for the title Partyman.
Ramin Djawadi, Aaron Zigman, Cliff Martinez, J. Ralph, Joe Hisaishi and Henry Jackman Invited to Join the Academy
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 276 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures to join the organization. Among the invited artists this year are a number of film composers including Ramin Djawadi whose credits include Iron Man, Clash of the Titans, Safe House and the upcoming Pacific Rim, Cliff Martinez whose film projects include Contagion, Drive and Best Picture nominee Traffic, Joe Hisaishi who scored the Academy Award-winning animated film Spirited Away, Aaron Zigman who is best known for his work on such films as The Notebook, Sex and the City and Bridge to Terabithia, Henry Jackman who scored this year’s Best Animated Film nominee Wreck-It-Ralph and J. Ralph who was nominated for Best Original Song this year for his work on Chasing Ice. In addition, Prince whose work for film includes Purple Rain and Happy Feet was also invited, as well as Siedah Garrett who performed last year’s Oscar nominated song Real in Rio from Rio.
