Tim Minchin has been tapped to score DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming feature Larrikins. The film is based on an original idea written by Harry Cripps (Supernova) and tells the story of an uptight bilby (a desert-dwelling marsupial), who has lived a sheltered life in the safety of his family burrow. When he ventures out and becomes privy to a dangerous secret, he finds himself launched on a musical adventure across the mystical and untamed Australian outback. Christina Steinberg (Rise of the Guardians, National Treasure) is producing the project. DreamWorks has announced that Minchin will likely take on a larger creative role in addition to writing the music and lyrics for the film. Minchin is best known for co-writing Matilda the Musical which was awarded a 2012 Olivier Award for Best New Musical and is currently nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical Score. Larrikins marks the Australian comedian/musician’s first major studio film project. No release date has been announced yet.

‘Turbo’ Soundtrack Details
Relativity Music Group will release the soundtrack album for Dreamworks Animation’s upcoming feature Turbo. The album features the songs from the film by Snoop Dogg, RUN-DMC, Tom Jones, Pitbull, Jackson 5, House of Pain, Ozomatli and Survivor. Also included are selections from the film’s original score composed by Henry Jackman (Wreck-It-Ralph, X-Men: First Class). The soundtrack will be released on June 16, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Turbo is directed by David Soren and features the voice talent of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson.
Henry Jackman Scoring Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Turbo’
Henry Jackman is scoring the upcoming Dreamworks Animation feature Turbo. The movie is directed by David Soren (Merry Madagascar) and follows an underdog snail who kicks into overdrive when he miraculously attains the power of super-speed. The film’s voice talent includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson. Lisa Stewart (Monsters vs Aliens) is producing the project. Jackman has previously scored Dreamworks Animation’s features Puss in Boots and Monsters vs Aliens. Turbo is set to be released on July 19, 2013 by Dreamworks and 20th Century Fox.
‘Rise of the Guardians’ Soundtrack Details
The details of the soundtrack album for Dreamworks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians have been revealed. The album features the film’s score composed, conducted and produced by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as the original song Still Dream performed by Renée Fleming and composed by Desplat with lyrics by the film’s screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire. The soundtrack will be released on November 13, 2012 by Varese Sarabande Records and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Rise of the Guardians based on the book series The Guardians of Childhood by William Joyce is directed by Peter Ramsey and tells the story of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and Jack Frost. The film’s voice talent includes Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law. The animated feature will be released on November 21.
Alan Silvestri to Score Dreamworks Animation’s ‘The Croods’
Alan Silvestri has revealed in a recent interview with Hollywood.com that he is attached to score Dreamworks Animation’s upcoming feature The Croods. The film written and directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicare follows The Croods, an introverted family, who find themselves guided out of their cave into this dynamic world by a resourceful newcomer who may bring more stress than relief to the patriarch of the family. The film’s voice talent includes Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage, Catherine Keener, Emma Stone, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman. The 3D animated feature is produced by Kristine Belson (How to Train Your Dragon) and Jane Hartwell (Shrek). The movie marks Silvestri’s first project for Dreamworks Animation. He has previously collaborated with Chris Sanders on Disney’s 2002 feature Lilo and Stitch.
Alexandre Desplat to Score Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Rise of the Guardians’ and Ben Affleck’s ‘Argo’
Alexandre Desplat has been hired to score the upcoming Dreamworks Animation feature Rise of the Guardians. The movie is based on the book series The Guardians of Childhood by William Joyce (Meet the Robinsons) who is also co-directing the film with Peter Ramsey. The movie follows a group of heroic childhood legends, including Santa Claus (voiced by Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and Jack Frost (Chris Pine) who teaming up to stop Pitch the Boogeyman (Jude Law) from sending the world into eternal darkness. Joyce has also co-written the film’s script with David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots, Rabbit Hole). Christina Steinberg (Bee Movie) and Nancy Bernstein are producing the project and Guillermo del Toro and Michael Siegel (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) serve as executive producers. Rise of the Guardians marks Desplat’s first major animated feature tentpole project and also his first movie for Dreamworks.
Alan Menken to Write Music for Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Lidsville’
Alan Menken has revealed in a recent posting on Twitter that he is in talks to work on the Dreamworks Animation musical Lidsville. The project would be the first non-Disney animation project for the multiple Academy Award-winning composer. The film is based on characters developed by Sid and Marty Krofft (Land of the Lost) from the 1970’s TV series of the same name. In the movie, a rebellious kid falls into an alternate reality world of living hats and talking caps. Conrad Vernon, who directed the animated hits Shrek 2 and Monsters vs Aliens brought the project to Dreamworks. The Krofft brothers will serve as exectuive producers on the production.
A.R. Rahman to score Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Monkeys of Bollywood’
Variety reports that A.R. Rahman has been hired to score the animated musical Monkeys of Bollywood from Dreamworks Animation. Also on board the project is lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Enchanted) and husband-and-wife producing team Gurinder Chadha and Paul Berge (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice). The project marks the studios’ first animated musical since 1998’s The Prince of Egypt, which was scored by Hans Zimmer and featured songs composed by Schwartz. The mumbai-set project is inspired by the Hindu epic poem “The Ramayana” and revolves around two monkeys who try to stop an ancient demon from conquering the world. No word yet on when the Bollywood-style animated musical is expected to come out.
