Varese Sarabande has announced the details for the upcoming period drama Bel Ami. The album includes the original score from the film written by Lakshman Joseph De Saram and Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman. The soundtrack will be released on March 20, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Bel Ami is directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod and stars Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci and Colm Meaney. The film revolves around a young man’s rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women. The drama recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and will be released in the UK on March 9, 2012. A domestic release through Magnolia Pictures is expected later this year. Watertower Music has released a soundtrack album for the teen comedy Project X. The album features the film’s songs by artists including Pusha T, AMC, J-Kwon, Far East Movement & Pitbull, Nas, Kid Cudi, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, A-Trak, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dog, Wale, D12, MGK and Shiny Toy Guns. The soundtrack is coming out today and is now available digitally on iTunes. Project X directed by Nima Nourizadeh and produced by Todd Phillips follows three seemingly anonymous high school seniors as they attempt to finally make a name for themselves by throwing a party that no one will forget. ‘To the Arctic 3D’ to Feature Music by Paul McCartney and Steve Wood

Steve Wood has written the score for the upcoming IMAX documentary To the Arctic 3D. The movie is narrated by Meryl Streep and follows the lives of a mother polar bear and her twin seven-month-old cubs as they navigate the changing Arctic wilderness they call home. Two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Greg MacGillivray has directed the MacGillivray Freeman Films production, the company behind such IMAX hit films as Everest and The Living Sea. Wood is best known for scoring several movies from the production company, including the Oscar-nominated short Dolphins and Coral Reef Adventure. In addition to the score, the movie will also feature original songs by Paul McCartney who has written a number of songs for movies before, most recently for 2009’s Everybody’s Fine. He received his last Oscar nomination for the title song to Cameron Crowe’s 2001 film Vanilla Sky. To the Arctic 3D is scheduled for release on April 20, 2012 in IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Intrada Records has announced the world premiere release of the complete score for the 1991 sci-fi movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Cliff Eidelman has composed the music for the film directed by Nicholas Meyer and starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and Christopher Plummer. The 2-CD set features the complete score written by the composer on one disc and the original 1991 soundtrack album on the other disc. Also included are several alternates plus both trailer scores, to date the only original trailer music recorded for a Star Trek film. Hans Zimmer’s Oscars Theme Released

Following last night’s Oscar ceremony, the compilation album Celebrate the Music – The 84th Annual Academy Award featuring music from the show has been released. The album includes the theme for this year’s show entitled Celebrate the Oscars composed by Hans Zimmer. Also featured are a number of tracks inspired by or derived from Zimmer’s thematic framework by the members of the all-star band that Zimmer and Pharrell Williams brought together for the show, including A.R. Rahman, Giorgio Moroder, Junkie XL, Sheila E. and Esperanza Spalding. Finally, the album also includes the cover version of What a Wonderful Life performed by Esperanza Spalding and the Southern California Children’s Chorus, which played during the ceremony’s In Memoriam sequence. Ramin Djawadi to Score Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

DelToroFilms.com is reporting that Ramin Djawadi has signed on to score the sci-fi monster movie Pacific Rim. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman. The movie is set in the future where soldiers piloting giant robots battle against giant monsters who have mysteriously risen five miles beneath the ocean. Travid Beacham (Clash of the Titans) has written the screenplay and Del Toro is producing the film with Thomas Tull & Jon Jashni for Legendary Pictures and Mary Parent (Role Models). Del Toro has beem quoted as saying “After many months we have finally closed the scoring with Ramin Djawadi – whose scores for Game of Thrones, Prison Break and Iron Man are amongst my favorites in the last few years.” The director has previously collaborated with composers Marco Beltrami (Hellboy, Mimic), Danny Elfman (Hellboy II: The Golden Army) and Javier Navarrete (Pan’s Labyrinth). Ludovic Bource has won his first Academy Award in the Best Original Score category for his music for Michel Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film The Artist. The other contenders in the category were John Williams (The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse), Alberto Iglesias (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) and Howard Shore (Hugo). All four nominated composers were in attendance at the awards ceremony.

Brian Ralston Scoring ‘Crooked Arrows’

Brian Ralston is currently scoring the upcoming sports drama Crooked Arrows. The movie directed by Steve Rash (Can’t Buy Me Love, The Buddy Holly Story) follows a rag-tag Native American high school lacrosse team that is forced to join the elite New York Prep League, which is comprised of better trained and equipped rivals. The film starring Brandon Routh, Gil Birmingham, Crystal Allen and Chelsea Ricketts is written by Brad Riddell and Todd Baird. J. Todd Harris (Jeepers Creepers) and Mitchell Peck (Priest) are producing the project, which is co-produced by Sports Studio (Miracle). This morning, CBS News featured a lengthy video segment on composer Alan Menken, focusing on the composer’s eight Academy Awards for Disney musicals. The video also shows Menken working on his most recent feature project, Mirror Mirror directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Sean Bean, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane (visit our previous article for more details) at his home studio near New York. In the segment, Menken also talks his work for the stage. The composer will be having three shows playing simultaneously on Broadway this spring, including Newsies, Sister Act and Leap of Faith. Ilan Eshkeri has recently published a video interview about his music for the drama Coriolanus. In the video, the composer talks about his collaboration with Ralph Fiennes who made his directorial debut on the project and the process of creating the score for the film based on the play by William Shakespeare.
