Composer Leo Birenberg (Cobra Kai, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, PEN15, Son of Zorn, Secret Society of Second-Born Royals) is reteaming with director Gabe Polsky (Genius, The Motel Life) on the upcoming western Butcher’s Crossing. The film starring Nicolas Cage, Fred Hechinger, Jeremy Bobb, Xander Berkeley, Rachel Keller & Paul Raci is set in the 1870s and tells the story of a buffalo hunter who lures a naïve young man into an ambitious expedition in the Colorado Rockies. Polsky also co-wrote the screenplay with Liam Satre-Meloy based on John Williams’ 1960 literary western. The director is also producing the project with Molly Conners (The Green Inferno, Like Father) & Amanda Bowers (Centigrade) for Phiphen Pictures, alongside Will Clarke & Andy Mayson (Big Game, The Ipcress File) for Altitude Film Entertainment. Birenberg has previously collaborated with Polsky on the documentaries Red Army (co-scored with Christophe Beck), In Search of Greatness and Red Penguins. Butcher’s Crossing will premiere next month at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and will be distributed in the U.S. by Saban Films.
Birenberg’s other upcoming projects include Season 5 of Netflix’s Cobra Kai (premiering on September 9) and the Roku Channel movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (to premiere on November 4). He also recently scored Katie Aselton’s Mack & Rita, which will be released in theaters nationwide next Friday, August 12.
