Tamar-kali (Mudbound, Josephine Decker’s Shirley, The Assistant, Palmer, The Lie, Come Sunday) is scoring the upcoming Netflix original film Shirley. The movie is written and directed by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, American Crime) and stars Regina King in the title role, alongside Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Christina Jackson, André Holland, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown and Terrence Howard. The biographical drama tells the story of trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the U.S. Ridley and King are also producing the project with Anikah McLaren and Elizabeth Haggard (Zola, The Rental) for Participant and Reina King for Royal Ties Productions. Shirley is expected to premiere later this year.
The composer has also recently scored Jon Sesrie Goff’s documentary After Sherman, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is currently awaiting a release date.
