Scoremagacine is reporting that Javier Navarette has signed on to score the upcoming HBO drama Hemingway & Gellhorn. The biopic focuses on the romance between Ernest Hemingway and WWII correspondent Martha Gellhorn, Hemingway’s inspiration for For Whom the Bell Tolls and the only woman who ever asked for a divorce from the writer. The film is directed by Philip Kaufman and stars Clive Owen, Nicole Kidman, David Strathairn, Parker Posey, Rodrigo Santoro, Molly Parker, Lars Ulrich, Peter Coyote, Diane Baker and Tony Shalhoub. James Gandolfini (The Sopranos) is producing the film through his production company Attaboy. Kaufman has previously worked with such composers as Bill Conti (The Right Stuff), Mark Adler (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Henry & June), Toru Takemitsu (Rising Sun), Stephen Warbeck (Quills) and most recently Mark Isham (Twisted). Hemingway & Gellhorn is currently being shot and is expected to premiere in early 2012 on HBO.
While Navarrete has no other confirmed scoring assignments at the moment, one movie he scored two years ago is still awaiting a domestic release. Joe Dante’s 3D fantasy adventure The Hole starring Chris Massoglia, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble, Teri Polo and Bruce Dern premiered at the 2009 Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and has since been released in many international territories. The film centers around two brothers who stumble upon a mysterious hole in their basement that leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares. The film marks Joe Dante’s first theatrical feature without his long time collaborator Jerry Goldsmith who has scored all his movies since 1984’s Gremlins. No domestic distribution deal has been set for The Hole and it is unknown at this point when the film will be released stateside.
