John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon, The Bourne Identity, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Shrek, Rio, United 93, Happy Feet, Bolt, Don’t Worry Darling) is currently scoring the upcoming animated feature That Christmas. The film directed by Simon Otto is based on filmmaker Richard Curtis’ best-selling series of children’s books, which tell multiple interweaved stories of love, loneliness, family and friends. Curtis (Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral) also co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Souter. Nicole P. Hearon (Once Upon a Snowman) & Adam Tandy (In the Loop, Inside No. 9) are producing the Locksmith Animation production. Bonnie Arnold (Tarzan, Over the Hedge) who previously collaborated with Powell on all How to Train Your Dragon movies serves as an executive producer. The composer has confirmed his involvement on Instagram. That Christmas is expected to premiere in late 2024 on Netflix.
Powell has also recently scored Illumination Entertainment’s Migration, which will open in theaters on December 22. He also has the live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon (currently scheduled to be released on June 13, 2025) coming up.
