Composer, arranger, conductor and pianist Sam Davis has written the underscore for the new film adaptation of the stage musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. The movie is written and directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Gods and Monsters) and stars Diego Luna, Tonatiuh, Jennifer Lopez, Josefina Scaglione, Bruno Bichir and Aline Mayagoitia. The film based on the 1992 stage musical of the same title written by Terrence McNally and featuring music by John Kander & lyrics by Fred Ebb (which is based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig) tells the story of a political prisoner and his cellmate, a window dresser convicted of public indecency, who form an unlikely bond as the latter recounts the plot of a Hollywood musical starring his favorite silver screen diva. Matt Sullivan serves as the executive music producer of the project, which is produced by Barry Josephson (Enchanted, Bones), Tom Kirdahy and Greg Yolen (The Good Liar). Davis has previously collaborated with Condon as the dance music arranger on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast live-action remake and also provided the arrangement for the song No Dames for the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar!. His other previous credits include (as a composer) the stage productions The Scottish Musical, A Good Boy & Dysfunctional Fables and (as an arranger/orchestrator) Romantic Poetry, The Trumpet of the Swan, Radio Girl and James and the Giant Peach. Kiss of the Spider Woman marks his feature scoring debut. The musical drama will premiere tomorrow at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
