Thomas Newman (American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, 1917, Skyfall, Finding Nemo) & Julia Newman (At the Gates, American Horror Stories) have teamed up to compose the music for the upcoming Netflix limited series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The show is created by Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story) & Ian Brennan (Glee, The Watcher) and stars Javier Bardem, Chloë Sevigny, Cooper Koch, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Nathan Lane, Ari Graynor, Leslie Grossman and Dallas Roberts. The second season of the Monster true crime anthology series (following 2022’s Nick Cave- & Warren Ellis-scored Dahmer) chronicles the case of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez. Murphy, Brennan & Bardem are also executive producing the project with Alexis Martin Woodall & Eric Kovtun (American Crime Story, Ratched), Scott Robertson (Blonde, The Andy Warhol Diaries), David McMillan, Louise Shore (Lessons in Chemistry, A Teacher), as well as Carl Franklin (Out of Time, Devil in a Blue Dress) who is also directing several episodes. Thomas Newman has previously contributed the main titles theme for the Murphy- & Woodall-, Koytun-, Robertson- & Shore-produced FX series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (for which he received an Emmy Award nomination), while Julia Newman composed the score for all eight episodes. The composers are sharing “music by” credit on Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which will premiere on September 19, 2024 exclusively on Netflix.
Thomas Newman’s other recent/upcoming projects include Andrew Stanton’s In the Blink of an Eye, which is currently awaiting a release date, as well as Marc Forster’s White Bird, which already opened in several international markets and will arrive in U.S. theaters on October 4.
