Michael Abels (Get OutNopeUs, The Burial, Landscape with Invisible HandSee You YesterdayBreaking) has recently been scoring the upcoming satirical comedy The American Society of Magical Negroes. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Kobi Libii and stars Justice Smith, David Alan Grier, Drew Tarver, An-Li Bogan, Michaela Watkins, Rupert Friend and Nicole Byer. The movie centers on a young man who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people’s lives easier. Libii also wrote the screenplay and is producing the project with Sight Unseen’s Julia Lebedev & Eddie Vaisman (A Thousand and One, Monsters and Men) and Angel Lopez (Dear White People, Bad Hair). Abels has previously scored the Lebedev- & Vaisman-produced drama Bad Education. The American Society of Magical Negroes is set to be released in theaters on March 22, 2024 by Focus Features.
