The 6-part crime drama is set in the 1960s and centers on legendary Detective Sam Spade, the infamous protagonist of American writer Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 classic novel The Maltese Falcon. Frank is directing the Black Bear production and is also executive producing the project with Owen, Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning, Vietnam), Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game, All Is Lost), Michael Heimler (Somebody I Used to Know, I Care a Lot), Barbara Letellier (The Night of the 12th), Simon Arnal & Caroline Benjo (Coco Before Chanel, The New Pope), Carole Scotta (Gagarine, A Chiara), Carlo Martinelli and David Helpern. Rivera (Hacks, Just Beyond) has previously collaborated with Frank on the Netflix shows Godless & The Queen’s Gambit and the feature A Walk Among the Tombstones. Monsieur Spade is set to premiere in early 2024 on AMC and AMC+.

Rivera has also composed the original score for the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series Lessons in Chemistry based on the novel of the same title by Bonnie Garmus and starring Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman, Aja Naomi King, Stephanie Koenig, Kevin Sussman, Patrick Walker and Thomas Mann. The 8-part drama is set in the early 1950s and follows a woman and aspiring scientist who accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives a lot more than recipes. Lee Eisenberg (WeCrashed, Bad Teacher) serves as the project’s showrunner and is also executive producing the Apple Studios production with Larson, Susannah Grant (Unbelievable, Erin Brockovich), Aggregate Films’ Michael Costigan & Jason Bateman (The Outsider, Under the Banner of Heaven), Natalie Sandy (Little America) and Louise Shore (A Teacher, Justine). Sarah Adina Smith (Birds of Paradise, Looking for Alaska) has directed and is executive producing the first two episodes. Lessons in Chemistry will premiere on October 13, 2023 on Apple TV+.
