Ryūichi Sakamoto (The Revenant, The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky, Snake Eyes) has composed the original music for the upcoming drama Minamata. The film is directed by Andrew Levitas (Lullaby) and stars Johnny Depp, Hiroyuki Sanada, Minami, Bill Nighy, Jun Kunimura, Ryo Kase, Tadanobu Asano, Akiko Iwase and Katherine Jenkins. The movie centers on celebrated war photographer W. Eugene Smith has become a recluse as he travels back to Japan to investigate the poisoning of the inhabitants of a fishing village called Minamata. Levitas also co-wrote the screenplay with David K. Kessler, Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman. The director is also producing the project with Depp, Sam Sarkar and Kevan Van Thompson (Into the Sun). Minamata will premiere later this month at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival.
As previously reported, Sakamoto also has the thriller Born to Be Murdered starring John David Washington & Alicia Vikander coming up. He also recently scored Luca Guadagnino’s short The Staggering Girl, which just premiered on MUBI.
