Universal Pictures and Working Title have announced today that Marius de Vries will serve as the executive music producer on the upcoming film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning stage musical Cats. The film is directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Miserables) and stars James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and Francesca Hayward. Hooper also co-wrote the screenplay with Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) and is producing the project with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner (Atonement, Darkest Hour) and Debra Hayward (Les Misérables). Lloyd Webber is executive producing the movie with Steven Spielberg, Angela Morrison and Jo Burn. De Vries has previously served as executive music producer on Damien Chazelle’s La La Land and Max Minghella’s Teen Spirit (to be released in 2019 following a premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this year) and also was credited as music director on Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge!Cats has just started principal photography and is set to be released on December 20, 2019 by Universal Pictures.
