Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi horror movie Alien: Covenant directed by Ridley Scott and starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz and Jussie Smollett. The film’s original music is composed by Jed Kurzel (Assassin’s Creed, The Babadook, Macbeth, The Snowtown Murders). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the romantic drama Everything, Everything directed by Stella Meghie and starring Amandla Stenberg, Ana de la Reguera, Anika Noni Rose, Nick Robinson and Taylor Hickson. Interscope Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie. Click here for the full album details. The third wide release this week is the family comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul directed by David Bowers and starring Jason Ian Drucker, Charlie Wright, Owen Asztalos, Tom Everett Scott and Alicia Silverstone. Edward Shearmur (Charlie’s Angels, Cruel Intentions, Johnny English, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) who previously scored the last two installments in the series has composed the film’s original score. Opening in New York before expanding to more markets within the next couple of weeks is the drama Wakefield written and directed by Robin Swicord and starring Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Garner, Jason O’Mara, Beverly D’Angelo, Ian Anthony Dale, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Isaac Leyva. The film’s original music is composed by Aaron Zigman (The Notebook, John Q, The Proposal, The Ugly Truth). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score is in the works. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by IFC Films. Visit the official movie website to learn more about the film.
Also opening in limited release is the Danish drama The Commune directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Trine Dyrholm, Ulrich Thomsen, Helene Reingaard Neumann, Lars Ranthe and Fares Fares. Fons Merkies has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack album. The drama was released in Denmark and other European markets last year and is being distributed in the U.S by Magnolia Pictures. Also opening in select theaters is the documentary Fight for Space directed by Paul Hildebrandt. The film’s original music is composed by Ron Jones (DuckTales, Family Guy, Star Trek: The Next Generation, American Dad!).
