No new movies are opening nationwide this week.
Playing in limited release since this past Sunday before expanding nationwide on January 6 is the drama Hidden Figures directed by Theodore Melfi and starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge, Glen Powell and Kevin Costner. The film’s original music is composed by Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, Gladiator), Pharrell Williams and Benjamin Wallfisch (Lights Out). Also playing in select cities before expanding nationwide on January 13 is the crime drama Live by Night directed by Ben Affleck who also stars in the movie, alongside Sienna Miller, Elle Fanning, Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana and Chris Cooper. The film’s original music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Martian, The Chronicles of Narnia, Shrek) who previously scored Affleck’s The Town and Gone Baby Gone. Playing in limited release since December 28 is the comedy drama 20th Century Women written and directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup and Lucas Jake Zumann. Roger Neill (Beginners, Mozart in the Jungle, Don’t Think Twice) has composed the film’s original music. Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring five selections from the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by artists such David Bowie, Talking Heads, The Raincoats, Fred Astaire, Benny Goodman & more. Another movie, which opened in select theaters on Christmas Day, is the German comedy drama Toni Erdmann written and directed by Maren Ade and starring Peter Simonischek, Sandra Hüller, Michael Wittenborn, Thomas Loibl, Thrystan Pütter, Hadewych Minis, Lucy Russell, Ingrid Bisu, Vlad Ivanov and Victoria Cocias. The movie doesn’t feature any original score and no soundtrack album has been announced. The dramedy, which is the German candidate in the Best Foreign Film category for the Academy Awards and is the perceived frontrunner to win the award, premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by Sony Pictures Classics. In select theaters since this past Wednesday, December 28, is the drama Paterson written and directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Adam Driver, Golshifteh Farahani, Barry Shabaka Henley, Cliff Smith, Chasten Harmon, William Jackson Harper and Masatoshi Nagasi. The film’s original music is composed by Jarmusch and Carter Logan as SQÜRL. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which revolves around a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey, premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by Amazon Studios and Bleecker Street.
