Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure Pete’s Dragon directed by David Lowery and starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford. The film’s original music is composed by Daniel Hart (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Comet, Tumbleweed). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by Bonnie “Prince” Billy, The Lumineers, Lindsey Stirling feat. Also opening wide is the animated comedy Sausage Party directed by Conrad Vernon & Greg Tiernan and starring Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd and Nick Kroll. Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) and Christopher Lennertz (Ride Along, Horrible Bosses) have composed the film’s original score. Menken has also contributed the original song The Great Beyond (with lyrics by Glenn Slater and the screenwriters). Also opening nationwide is the comedy drama Florence Foster Jenkins directed by Stephen Frears and starring Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg, Rebecca Ferguson and Nina Arianda. The film’s original score is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Queen, Philomena). Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the opera performances from the film by Streep and Aida Garifullina. Opening semi-wide in around 450 theaters is the dramatic thriller Anthropoid directed by Sean Ellis and stars Cillian Murphy, Jamie Dornan, Toby Jones, Charlotte Le Bon, Anna Geislerová, Harry Lloyd, Alena Mihulová, Marcin Dorociński, Bill Milner and Sam Keeley. Robin Foster (Metro Manila) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Opening in limited release is the heist thriller Hell or High Water directed by David Mackenzie and starring Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster and Gil Birmingham. The film’s original music is composed by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Proposition, Lawless). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as country music tracks by Colter Wall, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Chris Stapleton & more. Also opening in limited release is the action thriller Blood Father directed by Jean-François Richet and starring Mel Gibson, Erin Moriarty, Diego Luna, Michael Parks and William H. Macy. Blood Father follows an ex-convict who fights to protect his estranged daughter from the drug cartel that is hunting her down. The movie is being released in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate Premiere.
Also opening in select theaters is the thriller Edge of Winter directed by Rob Connolly and starring Tom Holland, Joel Kinnaman, Percy Hynes White, Rachelle Lefevre, Shiloh Fernandez, Rossif Sutherland, Patrick Garrow and Shaun Benson. The film’s original music is composed by Will Blair & Brooke Blair (Green Room, Blue Ruin). No soundtrack album has been announced. Edge of Winter follows two brothers are stranded by a brutal winter storm with an unpredictable father they barely know. The thriller is being released by Vertical Entertainment and is also available on VOD.
Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy Joshy written and directed by Jeff Baena and starring Thomas Middleditch, Adam Pally, Alex Ross Perry, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman, Lauren Graham, Alison Brie and Jenny Slate. Devendra Banhart has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album is available. Joshy follows a man who decides to take advantage of his bachelor-party plans after his fiancé commits suicide with the few friends still willing to join him. The comedy is being released in theaters by Lionsgate Premiere and will be available to stream exclusively on Hulu later this year.
Opening in New York before expanding to more markets within the next couple of weeks is the thriller Disorder (aka Maryland) written and directed by Alice Winocour and starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger. The film’s original music is composed by French DJ Gesaffelstein. Parlophone France has released a soundtrack album featuring the score when the movie opened overseas last year. Also opening in New York before coming to more cities later this month is the French romantic drama My King (Mon roi) directed by Maïwenn and starring Vincent Cassel, Emmanuelle Bercot and Louis Garell. Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Quills, Billy Elliott, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Indian Summers) has composed the film’s original music and received a Cesar Award nomination earlier this year for his work on the project. A soundtrack album is in the works. My King is being released in the U.S. by Film Movement.
