Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the comedy sequel Hot Tub Time Machine 2 directed by Steve Pink and starring Rob Corddry, Craig Robinsoin, Clark Duke, Adam Scott and Gillian Jacobs. The film’s original music is composed by Christophe Beck (Frozen, The Hangover, Edge of Tomorrow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) who previously scored the first part in the series. No soundtrack album has been announced. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 follows Lou, Nick and Jacob who inadvertently land in the future with Adam Jr. and have to alter the future in order to save the past. Also opening wide is the sports drama McFarland, USA directed by Niki Caro and starring Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Morgan Saylor, Martha Higareda, Michael Aguero, Sergio Avelar, Hector Duran, Rafael Martinez, Johnny Ortiz and Carlos Pratts. Antonio Pinto (City of God, Senna, Lord of War, Snitch) has composed the film’s original score. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the original end title song Juntos (Together) performed by Juanes. The third wide release of the week is the teen comedy The DUFF directed by Ari Sandel and starring Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Bianca Santos, Skyler Samuels, Nick Eversman and Ken Jeong. The film’s original score is composed by Dominic Lewis (Free Birds, The Man in the High Castle). Island Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Nova Rockafeller, Fall Out Boy, Nick Jonas, Icona Pop, Tegan and Sara, The Vamps, Jessie J, Kari Kimmel, Junkie XL earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the Argentinian comedy Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes) written and directed by Damian Szifro and produced by Pedro Almadovar. Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, The Book of Life) has composed the film’s original music. Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by Giorgio Moroder, Lucien Belmond, Bobby Womack and David Guetta. Wild Tales is one of the five nominees in the Best Foreign Language Film category at this year’s Academy Awards.
Also opening in select cities and on VOD is the indie drama All the Wilderness written and directed by Michael Johnson and starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Virginia Madsen, Isabelle Fuhrman, Danny DeVito and Evan Ross. The film’s original music is composed by Jónsi & Alex of Sigur Rós. The movie also features music by Sonic Youth, Elliott Smith and Ty Segall. No word yet on a soundtrack release. All the Wilderness follows an emotionally troubled boy whose connections with a mysterious kid and a fellow patient of his shrink help him wrestle with the death of his father. Also opening in select theaters and on VOD is the sci-fi thriller Digging Up the Marrow written and directed by Adam Green who also stars in the film alongside Ray Wise, Will Barratt and Alex Pardee. Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Battlestar Galactica) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Digging Up the Marrow follows a man who receives a package from a mysterious individual who claims he can prove that monsters exist.
