Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

exodusExpected to top the weekend box office is the biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings directed by Ridley Scott and starring Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton, Aaron Paul, Ben Mendelsohn, John Turturro, Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley. The film’s original music is composed by Alberto Iglesias (Tinker Tailor Soldier SpyThe Constant Gardener) Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as a couple of tracks written by additional composers Harry Gregson-Williams and Federico Jusid. top-fiveAlso opening wide is the comedy Top Five written and directed by Chris Rock and starring himself, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Cedric The Entertainer, JB Smoove, Sherri Shepherd, Anders Holm, Romany Malco and Leslie Jones. Questlove and Ludwig Goransson have composed the film’s original score. Def Jam Recording has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from and inspired by the film by artists including Jay Z & Kanye West, DMX, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, The Roots, Rakim and Salt-N-Pepa. inherent-viceOpening in Los Angeles and New York before expanding nationwide in January is the comedy Inherent Vice directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newsom. The film’s original music is composed by Jonny Greenwood who previously scored the director’s There Will Be Blood and The Master. Nonesuch Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the songs from the film by such artists as Neil Young, Can, The Marketts and Minnie Riperton. after-the-fallAlso opening in select cities is the thriller After the Fall co-written and directed by Saar Klein and starring Wes Bentley, Jason Isaacs, Vinessa Shaw and Haley Bennett. Marc Streitenfeld (PrometheusAmerican GangsterRobin Hood, The Grey) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music on December 23. Check back on this page for the full album details. After the Fall follows a guy who loses his job and embarks on a life of crime. The movie premiered at this year’s Berlin Film Festival and is being released by Entertainment One.

the-captiveAlso opening in limited release is the thriller The Captive directed by Atom Egoyan and starring Ryan Reynolds, Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Scott Speedman, Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast and Bruce Greenwood. The film’s original music is composed by Mychael Danna (Life of PiCapoteMoneyball) who previously collaborated with Egoyan on numerous movies. No soundtrack album has been announced. The Captive examines how the kidnapping of a man’s young daughter at a diner destroys the relationships among those involved. The psychological thriller premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released in theaters and VOD by A24 Films.
