Jon Brion has been tapped to score the upcoming crime drama The Gambler. The film is directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Escapist) and stars Mark Wahlberg, Jessica Lange, Brie Larson, Michael K. Williams, John Goodman and Emory Cohen. The movie is a remake of the 1974 film of the same title written by James Toback and starring James Caan and follows a literature professor with a gambling problem whose vices cause his life to spiral out of control. William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven, Body of Lies) has written the screenplay. Irwin Winkler (Raging Bull, Rocky, Goodfellas), Robert Chartoff (Rocky, Ender’s Game), Stephen Levinson (Entourage, Contraband) and David Winkler (Rocky Balboa) are producing the project. Brion’s previous film scoring credits include such titles as Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I Heart Huckabees and This Is 40. The Gambler is set to be released on December 19, 2014 by Paramount Pictures before expanding nationwide on January 1, 2015.
