Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the monster movie Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. The film’s music is composed and conducted by Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech, The Queen, The Grand Budapest Hotel). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Also opening wide is the sports drama Million Dollar Arm directed by Craig Gillespie, written by Tom McCarthy and starring Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, Suraj Sharma, Madhur Mittal, Pitobash and Alan Arkin. A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionnaire, 127 Hours) has composed the film’s original music. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s songs and score earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the indie drama The Immigrant directed by James Gray and starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner, Dagmara Dominczyk, Angela Sarafyan, Jicky Schnee and Yelena Solovey. Chris Spelman who previously worked with the director on The Yards and We Own the Night as a music consultant and on Gray’s last feature Two Lovers as a music adaptor/arranger has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The drama, which follows two sisters who travel to New York from their native Poland in search of a new start and the American dream premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by the Weinstein Company.
Also opening in limited release is the horror sequel Wolf Creek 2 directed by Greg McLean and starring John Jarratt, Ryan Corr, Philippe Klaus and Shannon Ashlyn. The film’s original music is composed by Johnny Klimek (Cloud Atlas, One Hour Photo, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by artists including Steppenwolf, The Tokens, Nellie Melba and Patsy Cline. Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy Don Peyote written and directed by Dan Fogler & Michael Canzoniero and starring Fogler himself, alongside Josh Duhamel, Jay Baruchel, Kelly Hutchinson and Wallace Shawn. Anne Hathaway and Topher Grace appear in cameo roles. Ben Lovett (Black Rock) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Opening in New York today before expanding to more cities within the next couple of weeks is the drama Half of the Yellow Sun co-written and directed by Biyi Bandele and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, John Boyega, Joseph Mawle, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, O.C. Ukeje and Rob David. Ben Onono and Paul Thomson have composed the film’s music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Half of the Yellow Sun follows a revolutionary who falls in love with one of two sisters whose stories unfold against the backdrop of the Nigerian-Biafran War. The movie premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by Monterey Media. Visit the official movie website to learn more about the drama.
Another limited release this week is the western drama A Night in Old Mexico directed by Emilio Aragón and starring Robert Duvall, Jeremy Irvine, Angie Cepeda, Luis Tosar, Joaquín Cosio, Jim Parrack, James Landry Hébert, Javier Gutiérrez and Michael Ray Escamilla. The director has also composed the film’s original music. A Night in Old Mexico centers on a stubborn Texas rancher who’s forced to give up his land and home and decides to flees in his Cadillac and hit the road with his estranged grandson for one last wild adventure.
