Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the animated sequel Rio 2. The album features the film’s original score composed by Academy Award nominee John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon, The Bourne Trilogy, Shrek, Chicken Run) who collaborated with Brazilian singer/songwriter and guitarist Milton Nascimento, the instrumental group UAKTI and the body percussion group Barbatuques on the project. The soundtrack will be released on April 8, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. As previously reported, Atlantic Records will release a separate soundtrack featuring the film’s songs. Rio 2 is directed by Carlinhos Brown and features the voice talent of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, will.i.am, Jemaine Clement, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Jamie Foxx, Rita Moreno, Bruno Mars and Kristin Chenoweth. I wonder how long it’ll take Powell to stop wasting his talent on these stupid and uninspired animated features. I know he was on a “vacation”, but come on. There are plenty of other movies in the works which could hugely benefit from his music. But instead they are getting Beltrami or a similar master of boring.

I completely agree. Even though some of his animated works are that of pure genius (How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, etc), I do feel like he’s stagnating a little bit with staying in the animated genre.
In a way, I could almost say the same thing with Harry Gregson-Williams in regards to live action thrillers.

Animation for the past few years have been the most creative in the film industry.
John Powells music is at its best with his animated films. The colors, drama and adventure shines in them. I hope he continues to do them.
