Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the romantic comedy That Awkward Moment written and directed by Tom Gormican and starring Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots, Mackenzie Davis and Jessica Lucas. David Torn (Lars and the Real Girl, The Wackness) has composed the film’s original score. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by artists including Crozet, Night Drive, Black Apples, Strange Talk and Lavender Diamond. Also opening wide following an Academy Awards-qualifying limited run in December is the drama Labor Day directed by Jason Reitman and starring Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffith, Clark Gregg and Tobey Maguire. Rolfe Kent (Sideways, Mean Girls, Election) who previously scored the Reitman’s features Thank You for Smoking, Up in the Air and Young Adult has composed the film’s original music. Warner Bros. Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs featured in the drama. Opening in limited release is the indie drama At Middleton directed by Adam Rodgers and starring Vera Farmiga, Andy Garcia, Taissa Farmiga, Spencer Lofranco, Peter Riegert and Tom Skerrit. Jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval who previously scored the TV biopic For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, in which Andy Garcia portrayed Sandoval, has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. At Middleton centers on a once-in-a-lifetime relationship that develops between two strangers over the course of a single day. Also opening in limited release following an awards-qualifying run in 2013 is the documentary Tim’s Vermeer directed by Teller of Penn & Teller fame and starring Tim Jenison, a Texas-based inventor, who attempts to solve the mystery of how 17th century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer managed to paint so photo-realistically. Conrad Pope (My Week with Marilyn, Pavilion of Women) has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in select cities is the indie dramatic thriller The Wait written and directed by M Blash and starring Jena Malone, Chloë Sevigny, Luke Grimes, Devon Gearhart, Michael O’Keefe and Josh Hamilton. Recent Oscar nominee Owen Pallett (Her, The Box) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. The Wait follows two sisters who contemplate their mother’s resurrection following a mysterious phone call.
