Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the comedy Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa directed by Jeff Tremaine and starring Johnny Knoxville who punks strangers while in character as senior citizen Irving Zisman. The film’s original musis is composed by Sam Spiegel whose music has previously been featured in some of the other Jackass features and Koool G Murder who is the brother of the film’s co-writer and producer Spike Jonze. Also opening wide is the thriller The Counselor directed by Ridley Scott, written by Cormac McCarthy and starring. Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt. Daniel Pemberton (The Awakening) has composed the film’s original score. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the French drama Blue Is the Warmest Color directed by Abdellatif Kechiche and starring Lea Seydoux, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Salim Kechiouche and Jérémie Laheurte. The movie doesn’t feature an original score and no soundtrack album is available. The film is based on Julie Maroh’s graphic novel and follows a young woman whose longings and ecstasies and losses are charted across a span of several year. The drama premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where it received the Palme d’Or and was picked up for domestic distribution by IFC Films. Also opening in select cities is the documentary Spinning Plates directed by Joseph Levy about three restaurants – including a cutting-edge restaurant named the sixth best in the world, an 150-year-old family restaurant and a fledgling Mexican restaurant – and their challenges.Edward Shearmur (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Johnny English, Reign of Fire) has composed the film’s original score. Another limited release this week is the French thriller Bastards (Les salauds) directed by Claire Denis and starring Vincent Lindon, Chiara Mastroianni, Julie Bataille, Michel Subor, Lola Creton and Alex Descas. The film’s original music is composed by the British rock band Tindersticks who has previously collaborated with the director on a number of projects.
