Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the animated film sequel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 directed by Cody Cameron & Kris Pearn and featuring the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Will Forte, Andy Samberg, Benjamin Bratt, Neil Patrick Harris, Terry Crews and Kristen Schaal. Mark Mothersbaugh who has previously scored the original 2009 film, as well as Hotel Transylvania for Sony Pictures Animation has composed the movie’s score. Also opening wide is the indie comedy Don Jon written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and starring himself, as well as Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Brie Larson and Tony Danza. Nathan Johnson (Brick, Looper, The Brothers Bloom) has composed the film’s original score. A soundtrack album is expected to be announced soon. Check back on this page for the full album details. The third wide release of the week is the romantic comedy Baggage Claim written and directed by David E. Talbert and starring Paula Patton, Derek Luke, Taye Diggs, Jill Scott, Boris Kodjoe, Trey Songz, Adam Brody, Tia Mowry, LaLa Anthony and Djimon Hounsou. The film’s original score is composed by Aaron Zigman (The Notebook, Bridge to Teribithia). No word yet on a soundtrack release. Baggage Claim follows a flight attendant who is determined to find the man of her dream before her younger sister gets married. Opening in limited theaters is the 3D concert film Metallica: Through the Never directed by Nimród Antal (Predators) and starring Dane DeHaan as a young roadie who is sent on an urgent mission during Metallica’s live set in front of a sold-out arena audience. Blackened Recordings has released a soundtrack album featuring 15 songs recorded live in Edmonton and Vancouver in August of 2012 while the band was filming the performance footage in the movie. Also opening in limited release is the documentary Muscle Shoals directed by Greg “Freddy” Camalier, which tells the story of FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, known as the birthplace of some of rock ‘n’ roll’s and soul’s most iconic songs. Republic Records has released a soundtrack including the songs featured in the film by artists including Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, Etta James, Jimmy Hughes and Percy Sledge. Opening in Los Angeles and New York is the horror thriller We Are What We Are directed by Jim Mickle and starring Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner, Wyatt Russell, Nick Damici and Kelly McGillis. The film’s original music is composed by Philip Mossman & Darren Morris and Jeff Grace (Stake Land, Meek’s Cutoff). Also opening in select cities is the documentary Inequality for All directed by Jacob Kornbluth and featuring Robert Reich—professor, best-selling author, and Clinton cabinet member—as he demonstrates how the widening income gap has a devastating impact on the American economy. Marco D’Ambrosio (We Live in Public) has composed the film’s score. No soundtrack album has been announced. Another limited release this weekend is the indie drama Morning written and directed by Leland Orser and starring Jeanne Tripplehorn, Laura Linney, Leland Orser, Elliott Gould, Jason Ritter and Kyle Chandler. The film’s original score is composed by Michael Brook (The Fighter, Into the Wild, The Vow). No word on a soundtrack release. Morning follows a married couple reeling from the tragic death of their only child. The film is opening in select theaters and is being released by Anchor Bay Films.
Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy The Secret Lives of Dorks directed by Salomé Breziner and starring Gaelan Connell, Vanessa Marano, Beau Mirchoff, Jim Belushi, Jennifer Tilly and Riley Volke.
