Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the crime comedy Identity Thief directed by Seth Gordon and starring Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Favreau, Amanda Peet, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Genesis Rodriguez, Morris Chestnut, John Cho, Robert Patrick and Eric Stonestreet. The film’s music is composed by Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, NBC’s Revolution). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as a cover of James Brown’s The Payback performed by Amanda Brown and a song by Ty Taylor has been released digitally earlier this week on Back Lot Music. Also opening wide is the psychological thriller Side Effects directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Thomas Newman has composed his third score for the director following Erin Brockovich and The Good German. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music is now available digitally and will be released in March on CD by Varese Sarabande. Opening in limited release is the indie comedy A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III written, directed and produced by Coppola and starring Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Katheryn Winnick, Aubrey Plaza, Patricia Arquette and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Liam Hayes (also known as Plush) has composed the film’s score. Night Fever Music has released a soundtrack album featuring Hayes’ score, as well as a track performed by Jason Schwartzman and a cover of the Brazilian classic Aguas De Marco sung by actors Winnick & Sheen. Also opening in limited release is the World War II drama Lore directed by Cate Shortland (Sommersault) and starring Saskia Rosendahl, Kai Malina, Ursina Lardi and Nele Trebs. The film’s original music is composed by Max Richter (Waltz With Bashir). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music has been released last fall by Porchlight Films. Also opening in select cities is the horror thriller Spiders directed by Tibor Takacs and starring William Hope, Christa Campbell, Patrick Muldoon, Sydney Sweeney, Shelly Varod and Lincoln Frager. The film’s original music is composed by Joseph Conlan (Toolbox Murders, NCIS). Screamworks Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music last fall. Another limited release this week is the indie drama The Playroom directed by Julia Dyer (Late Bloomers) and starring John Hawkes, Olivia Harris, Cody Linley and Molly Parker. Bruce Richardson is credited as the film’s composer. No soundtrack album has been released. The movie premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and has been picked up by Freestyle Releasing for domestic distribution. To find out more about the film, visit the official movie website.
