This Tim Burton movie is an insult to the classic series “Dark Shadows.”
Have you watched it yet? No. So, don’t talk like you watched it.
I’m with Sandor. The trailers along with the titles of the soundtrack, give enough of a picture for me to save my money on this waste of bad jokes that should have been called “Barnabas: Dead and Loving It.:
I love the old Dark Shadows, but I don’t think this movie is making fun of it. It just has more comedy in it. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton love Dark Shadows too. Jonathan Frid has a cameo appearance in this movie, so I don’t think he’s offended by it.

I, also, agree with Sandor and Jim. The trailers and the TV spots give a good ideal of what this movie will be about…a comedy, actually more of a spoof. The movie’s official web site refers to the movie as a “gothic comedy”. Barnabas and the Collins, in general, come across as a bunch of buffoons. And in one of the latest TV spots they dare to say: “From the mind of Tim Burton”! Dark Shadows was the creation of Dan Curtis, all that Burton can take credit for is turning Dark Shadows into a sick joke. I will admit the sets look fantastic, but the storyline sucks, sorry for the pun.
I don’t want to judge the film now but I do hope Mr. Elfman’s score will be fantastic as always, probably with some surprise (something iconic like ‘Alice’s Theme’ will be great).
“The Final Confrontation” returns!
As Lara Parker (“Angelique”) said at the ComicCon (see youtube): We may not agree on every detail of the film, “But you do want it to BE.” Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scoot, David Selby, and Jon Frid all flew to London to film cameos. They all WANT the film to be a success. THAT’S ENOUGH FOR ME. This will never replace the original series but should add new blood to the franchise. And if, as Michelle Pfeiffer hopes, a sequel or two are warranted, perhaps more members of the cast can be a part of it.
Myself, I don’t like the way they misspelled Barnabas’ name in the soundtrack listing.
I had envisioned a trilogy: the first one a slow story about Barnabas’ arrival, Julia sleuthing & experimenting on a cure; the second the 1795 epic; the third one more of a ripoff with Quentin and other monsters. So this movie sounds more like the third one, a ripoff. But I’m not going to boycott it because it doesn’t conform to the dream I’ve nurtured for 40 years. I’d prefer Robert Cobert’s music. I’d prefer Seaview Terrace as Collinwood. I’d prefer Sy Thomashoff’s set designs. But I liken this new film almost as if the show had been satirized on Saturday Nite Live, if that show had been in existence at the height of Dark Shadows’ popularity. BUT the Tim Burton film is NOT a comedy.
As a friend of an insider, I was given the shooting script a year ago. I read only the first half of it, because I want to be surprised, but to me it seemed slow and rich with detail. After viewing the trailer, I did flip through the script again and found some of the same lines from the trailer, so it proved to me that the trailer exaggerated the humerous more than the overall film will. Expect a few chills, a few shocks, but mostly a relationship story about Vicki to begin with, then Barnabas and Liz, and Angelique.
If Warner Bros is mis-representing the movie in the trailer and TV spots, then its about time Burton confront them about this. Its like the WB is doing their best to make fans upset with the comical aspects of the film and therefore make the film fail.
The title of your article is misleading, since the Score was what has been released, not the Soundtrack. You make that clear in your article, but the headline is misleading. I am very interested in the soundtrack. The score is very good, from the samples I have heard of it, but hearing the Soundtrack will give us more of an idea what the whole movie will sound like. If it all sounded like the Danny Elfman score, I’d be glad. It has a very good, spooky quality to it with a lot of touches of Robert Cobert’s sound mixed in/homaged. I’m just dreading it when the movie seems to turn into spoofing of Dark Shadows and going into what I call “Disco Duck” mode, but a fellow DS fan has called “Disco Barney” LOL!
