Nico Muhly is currently scoring the upcoming drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The project reunites the composer with director Stephen Daldry, for whom he previously scored the Academy Award-nominated 2008 drama The Reader starring Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis, Jeffrey Wright and Max von Sydow. The movie is based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer and centers on a 9-year-old boy who finds a key in a vase that belongs to his father – who perished in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks – and searches to find the lock that goes with it. The film’s screenplay is written by Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Scott Rudin (The Social Network, No Country for Old Men) is producing the project. Warner Bros will release the drama on December 25, 2011 in time for Awards consideration.
While the project might be Muhly’s highest profile project to date, the composer has also scored the indie drama Margaret, which is opening in limited release his weekend. The movie directed by Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count on Me) stars Anna Paquin, J. Smith Cameron, Jean Reno, Jeannie Berlin, Allison Janney, Matthew Broderick, Mark Ruffalo and Matt Damon. The drama centers on a high school student who feels certain that she inadvertently played a role in a traffic accident that has claimed a woman’s life.
