Film Music Reporter has learned that Alexandre Desplat has signed on to score the drama The Ides of March. George Clooney directs and stars in the film about a young press spokesman, played by Ryan Gosling, who falls prey to backroom politics, the treacherous manipulations of veteran operatives and the seduction of a young intern. The movie is an adaptation of the Broadway play Farragut North and co-stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Max Minghella and Jeffrey Wright. Clooney adapted the play for the screen with Grant Heslov who previously co-wrote the director’s Academy-Award-nominated drama Good Night, and Good Luck. The project marks Clooney’s fourth directorial feature effort. He most recently worked with composer Randy Newman on the 2008 romantic comedy Leatherheads. Sony Pictures is planning to open The Ides of March on October 14, 2011 in limited release and expand through the holidays and Awards season.
As previously reported, the composer also has the final installment in the Harry Potter series coming up. Desplat has recently been working on the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2 in London, where the music is being recorded. WaterTower Music is set to release the soundtrack for the movie on July 12, 2011. The film will be released on July 15.
