Opening in theaters nationwide this week is the horror comedy Studio 666 directed by BJ McDonnell and starring Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, Rami Jaffee, Whitney Cummings, Will Forte, Jenna Ortega, Leslie Grossman and Jeff Garlin. The film’s original score is composed by Roy Mayorga (best known as the drummer of Ministry, Hellyeah and Stone Sour). John Carpenter has written the theme song and Foo Fighters have contributed the original songs for the fictional band Dream Widow. Also opening wide following an awards-qualifying release in December is the movie musical Cyrano directed by Joe Wright and starring Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Ben Mendelsohn. The National’s Bryce Dessner (The Two Popes, The Kitchen) & Aaron Dessner (C’mon C’mon, Jockey) have composed the film’s original score and songs. Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ songs and score last year. Opening in select theaters today is the comedy drama Butter co-written and directed by Paul A. Kaufman and starring Mira Sorvino, Alex Kersting, Mykelti Williamson, McKaley Miller, Brian Van Holt, Annabeth Gish, Jack Griffo, Ravi Patel, Adain Bradley and Jake Austin Walker. The film’s original music is composed by Jeff Toyne (RogueDirty Girl, Filthy Rich, 9/11You Me Her). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows an obese high school junior who secretly befriends the prettiest girl in school via social media by pretending to be a jock from another school, is being distributed by Blue Fox Entertainment.

Opening in select theaters and on VOD today is the thriller The Desperate Hour directed by Phillip Noyce, written by Chris Sparling and starring Naomi Watts. Fil Eisler (Revenge, Empire, How to Be Single  SuperintelligenceOuter Banks, CHiPsThunder Force) has composed the film’s original music. Gardener Recordings has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening in select theaters and on VOD today is the drama I’ll Find You directed by Martha Coolidge and starring Adelaide Clemens, Leo Suter, Stephen Dorff, Connie Nielsen and Stellan Skarsgard. The film’s original music is composed by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek (Finding NeverlandUnfaithful,  Get Low, The Visitor, Washington Square, Lost Souls). No soundtrack album has been released. Also opening in select U.S. theaters and on VOD is the Norwegian disaster thriller The Burning Sea directed by John Andreas Andersen and starring Kristine Kujath Thorp, Rolf Kristian Larsen, Bjørn Floberg, Anders Baasmo and Anneke von der Lippe. Johan Söderqvist (Let the Right One InKon-Tiki, Things We Lost in the Fire,, In a Better World) & Johannes Ringen (The Quake) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which follows a group of researchers assessing the damage after a drilling rig dramatically collapses in the North Sea who discover that this could be the start of an apocalyptic catastrophe, is being released in the U.S. by Magnolia Pictures’ Magnet Releasing.

Opening in Los Angeles following a release in New York last weekend and before expanding to more markets in the coming weeks is the documentary The Automat directed by Lisa Hurwitz about the iconic restaurant chain Horn & Hardart. The film’s original score is composed by Hummie Mann (Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Year of the Comet, Thomas and the Magic Railroad).
