Terence Blanchard is reuniting with director Kasi Lemmons on the upcoming biographical drama Harriet. The film stars Cynthia Erivo in the title role, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles and Clarke Peters. The movie tells the story of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman and centers on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity. Lemmons also co-wrote the screenplay with Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans) who is also producing the project with Debra Martin Chase (The Princess Diaries, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) for Martin Chase Productions, alongside Daniela Taplin Lundberg (The Kids are All Right, Beasts of No Nation) for Stay Gold Features. Blanchard (Inside Man, Malcolm X, The 25th Hour, Red Tails) has previously scored Lemmon’s first three features Eve’s Bayou, The Caveman’s Valentine and Talk to Me. Harriet is currently in post-production and is expected to be released later this year by Focus Features.
Blanchard’s recent projects include Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, for which he just received a BAFTA nomination last week and is also on the shortlist in the Original Score category for this year’s Academy Awards.
His music in BlacKkKlansman is very nice and melodic, especially the main theme. ??
