James Newton Howard has been hired to score the upcoming Jumanji sequel. The film is directed by Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher, Orange County) and stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian, Jack Black and Nick Jonas. No plot details have been announced yet. Scott Rosenberg (High Fidelity, Con Air) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The 5th Wave) have written the screenplay based on a previous draft by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers (Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Lego Batman Movie). Matt Tolmach (The Amazing Spider-Man) and William Teitler (The Polar Express) are producing the project. Joe Johnston’s original 1995 Jumanji movie was scored by James Horner. The Jumanji sequel is set to be released on July 27, 2017 by Sony Pictures.
The composer’s most recent project is the fantasy adventure Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which will be released next month.

I love that JNH is doing more of the action/adventure movies he scores so well. He’s so much better on them than on those gritty urban dramas he loves to do.
Well, this came out of nowhere. I guess I won’t be surprised if his tunes for Dinosaur or Kong were among the temps for this. Hope he gets lots of fun with this one nevertheless.
