Deadline is reporting that Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda will be teaming up to write the music for a live action feature adaptation of The Little Mermaid. The movie version is also said to feature songs from Disney’s classic animated movie, for which Menken won two Academy Awards for Best Original Song (with Howard Ashman) and Best Original Score. Marc Platt (Into the Woods, Wanted, Legally Blonde, Bridge of Spies) who is also on board of Disney’s upcoming Mary Poppins Returns will be producing the project. No director and cast members have been announced yet.
Menken whose latest project, Sausage Party, is currently playing in theaters nationwide, also has Disney’s live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast coming up. Miranda who is best known for the stage musical Hamilton is also working on the music for Disney’s upcoming animated movie Moana.
