Go See Talk has published a 30-minutes video conversation with James Newton Howard that was shot last week in Dallas, where he conducted the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on his first full concert of his film work for The Masters of Film Music series. During the interview, the composer talks about his background and his first film score, his work methods and why he did not come back to score The Dark Knight Rises after his collaboration with Hans Zimmer on the first two scores for Christopher Nolan’s Batman series. He also hints about what to expect from the upcoming The Bourne Legacy score and whether or not he will be incorporating any of John Powell’s material from the previous Bourne films. Newton Howard has just recently finished writing and recording the score for the highly anticipated movie adaptation of The Hunger Games, for which he wrote roughly 80 minutes of music in about four weeks. James Newton Howard to Score ‘The Hunger Games’
James Newton Howard has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games. He has stepped in for Danny Elfman who was originally announced to score the film and had to leave the project due to a scheduling conflict. The Hunger Games based on the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins is directed by Gary Ross and stars Jennifer Lawrence as a young woman selected to represent her district in a televised fight to the death. Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson are co-starring in the film. The project marks Newton Howard’s third scoring assignment for the coming year following Snow White and the Huntsman and The Bourne Ultimatum. According to a recent interview with Elfman on KCRW, he is currently finishing up scoring Men in Black III and will move straight into working on Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie and Dark Shadows afterwards, which likely led to the scheduling conflict.
Universal Republic to release ‘The Hunger Games’ Soundtrack
Lionsgate has announced today that Universal Republic will be releasing a number of different soundtrack albums for next year’s The Hunger Games. Most notably, the label is planning a release of the film’s score by Danny Elfman and T Bone Burnett. In addition, Universal Republic will also release a series of companion recordings that will feature new songs directly influenced by the themes and subject matter of The Hunger Games, all recorded by some of music’s most successful and acclaimed artists. The film’s Executive Music Producer and co-composer T-Bone Burnett will produce many of these recordings, and will oversee all production. Danny Elfman and T Bone Burnett to Team Up for ‘The Hunger Games’
Lionsgate (via The Hollywood Reporter) has confirmed today that Danny Elfman and T Bone Burnett are teaming up to score the upcoming film adaptation of The Hunger Games. As previously reported, Elfman mentioned in an interview earlier this month that he has been in talks to score the film. Apart from collaborating on the score with Elfman, Burnett will also serve as the film’s Executive Music Producer, producing songs for the film and soundtrack. The movie based on the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins is directed by Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit). Jennifer Lawrence stars a young woman selected to represent her district in a televised fight to the death. Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson are co-starring. Nina Jacobson (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, One Day) and Jon Kilik (Babel, Inside Man) are producing. The Hunger Games will be released on March 23, 2011.
Danny Elfman to Reunite with Sam Raimi on ‘Oz’ and In Talks to Score ‘The Hunger Games’
In a recent interview with Danny Elfman at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Theater in downtown Los Angeles, the composer talked about some of his upcoming projects. He revealed that he will be reuniting with director Sam Raimi for the first time since 2004’s Spider-Man 2. Raimi’s next directorial effort is Walt Disney Pictures’ fantasy tentpole Oz: The Great and Powerful. The film is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz that finds the titular character arriving in the Land of Oz and being treated like a wizard by the colorful locals. The movie’s cast includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots, Rabbit Hole) is writing the screenplay and Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) is producing.
