Composer Terence Blanchard (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm X, Harriet, 25th Hour, Da 5 Bloods, One Night in Miami…) is reuniting with director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard, Beyond the Lights) on the upcoming historical drama The Woman King. The film starring Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch and John Boyega is set in Africa’s Kingdom of Dahomey and tells the story of Nanisca, the general of the all-female military unit, and Nawi, an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who who violated their honor and enslaved their people. As previously reported, Lebo M has written original songs for the project. Prince-Bythewood & Dana Stevens (City of Angels, Fatherhood) wrote the screenplay. Davis is also producing the TriStar Pictures production with Cathy Schulman (Crash, The Illusionist), Julius Tennon and Maria Bello. Blanchard has previously collaborated with Prince-Bythewood on the feature Love & Basketball and the TV shows Shots Fired and Swagger. The Woman King is set to be released in theaters on September 16, 2022 by Sony Pictures.
Blanchard also continues to score HBO’s Perry Mason, which will return for a second season.
