Stephen Warbeck has been chosen as the composer for the upcoming HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series and is produced and co-written by David Benioff (The 25th Hour, Troy, The Kite Runner). Game of Thrones is set in a fictitious world where magic exists and the ruling empire is in shambles. The series chronicles the conflicts of kings, queens, mercenaries and warlords as the they battle for control of the throne.The cast includes Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey. The series will premiere in 2011 and will have 10 episodes in its first season.
Warbeck also has a number of other scores coming out in the near future, all of which have been completed. The orchestral score for There Be Dragons has recently been recorded in London. In the drama set during the Spanish Civil War, a candidate for canonization is investigated by a journalist who discovers his own estranged father had a deep, dark and devastating connection to the saint’s life. The movie is directed by Roland Joffe (The Mission, The Killing Fields) and stars Charlie Cox, Wes Bentley and Olga Kurylenko. According to the movie’s official Facebook page, a worldwide release is planned for spring 2011.
Warbeck also provided the score for the comedy Killing Bono starring Krysten Ritter, Ben Barnes and Pete Postlethwaite. In the movie directed by Nick Hamm (The Hole), two brothers attempt to become global rock stars but can only look on as old school friends U2 become the biggest band in the world. The film is set for a spring 2011 UK premiere. Finally, Warbeck also recently scored the BBC movie Just William, which follows the exploits of 11-year-old tearaway William Brown and his band of adventurous “outlaws”.
