Brian Tyler has officially signed on to score Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and reunites the case of the original 2012 film, including Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Don Cheadle. James Spader will be portraying Ultron, the main villain in the film, while Elizabeth Olsen has been cast as the Scarlet Witch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver, Paul Bettany as the Vision and Thomas Kretschmann as Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker. Kevin Feige is producing the project. Alan Silvestri scored the first installment in the series. Tyler had been rumored to score the sequel for several months after he was hired for both Marvel features in 2013, Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. The composer also composed the music for the TV special Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe, which premiered on ABC last night. Avengers: Age of Ultron is currently in production and will be released on May 1, 2015 by Walt Disney Pictures.
As previously reported, Tyler also has Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as Steven Quale’s Into the Storm coming up this summer. He is also set to score the action sequel Fast & Furious 7, which has been rescheduled to open on April 10, 2015 since our last update.
Awesome news!
After a big desilusion with Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes a great new… of course i would preffer David Newman (based on his Tarzan score) but Brian for me is a modern John Williams
Loved his scores to Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 last year! I think Thor 2 was the strongest Marvel score yet (Now You See me was really cool too, just saw it on cable). Looking forward to seeing what he does with the Avengers!
Happy to see Marvel is keeping their new minion so that far better composers can work on more decent movies. Tyler’s soulless music is perfect por Marvel’s soulless movies.
I like Brian Tyler’s work; I thought he was a hidden gem of the Fast & Furious crew. But I also like Alan Silvestri’s work on Avengers. That film brought Silvestri out of his doldrums, when he was recycling his militaristic bag of tricks from Judge Dredd on GI Joe and The A-Team. Plus, Silvestri’s work on Avengers gained a thematic cohesion from his Captain America score. Granted, Tyler’s work is the new thematic cohesion in Marvel, given his scoring of the studio’s own anthem. And Tyler has the best Iron Man score (though I still prefer Doyle’s work on the first Thor). I’m glad Jackman decided to reuse portions of Silvestri’s Captain America theme if only for a little bit. Maybe Tyler will give a tip of the hat to Silvestri in Age of Ultron. Who knows.
The Avengers 2 story looks epic, Spader is going to play Ultron, Tyler scoring.
IS IT MAY 2015 YET??
And yeah Kevin I’m sure he will. Tyler even gave a nod to Silvestri’s Cap score in Thor 2. And good point about the Marvel Studio anthem. Its badass.
Tyler’s “Into Eternity” from Thor The Dark World was one of the most moving pieces I have heard in a long time, the music that accompanied the funeral sequence. Haunting and SOULFUL. And his Iron Man 3 had the best main credits music of last year! Very glad to see this.
I agree with @Kevin, Silvestri’s score for the first Avengers was really great. But to choose Tyler was an smart choice by Marvel. Now, its films may finally get some musical cohesion. Well, Tyler used Captain America’s theme on his Thor 2 score, and I hope that he uses the Avengers’ theme as well.
so how big is that paycheck gonna be?
A fraction of a random Williams’ paycheck.
SO BIG?
I don’t know — you can win more money in Power Ball. 😉
Another Marvel movie, another Brian Tyler score…More of the same then!
It’s also good that Tyler scores the film the facte that he can integrate his own themes of Iron Man and Thor without being said to be unoriginal…it can at last give a formal shape for the Marvel Universe Music
Man! I was really hoping Hans Zimmer would do the score.
lol
Great news a perfect choice. I think Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 were the two best scores of Marvel movies and I really liked the Captain America and Avengers scores as well. This is a really great choice because of Tyler’s respect known for the other themes (I like how Tyler quoted the Captain America theme in Thor 2 and when he scored Rambo he extensively used the Goldsmith theme). The Avengers music should be brought to another level now with Tyler on center stage with the Avengers 2. And fittingly the themes of the two biggest characters (Thor and Iron Man) were written by Tyler. And there is a unifying idea to this continuity that I really like.
I hope he keeps the Alan Silvestri Main theme, it’s not the greatest, but it would be nice if at least the Avengers movies had a little musical continuity, I didn’t enjoy the “Iron Man 3” score that much, I did love the closing credits, but Tyler did a good job on Thor, so I’m crossing my fingers for something good on Age of Ultron.
Been waiting for this announcement since last May!
Thank God! I really like his works for “Iron Man 3” and “Thor 2” (his cue for the funeral scene named “Into Eternity” is beautiful!)
I thought that I would be ECSTATIC at the news of Alan Silvestri not returning for the Avengers sequel. I didn’t think he delivered that a great a score for The Avengers. I found it to be an underwhelming score lacking any real emotion. With the exception of one epic, memorable score (the main theme) the score was rather lackluster.
Alas, I am not (ecstatic).
Brian Tyler. Seriously, Marvel? BRIAN TYLER? Marvel/Disney continue to disappoint me. I guess mediocrity is enough for them and Joss – as long as they’re a competent composer – they’ll do! Why have an inspired, agile and eclectic composer who can add richness and depth to your film (thereby assuring that it’ll be the best film it can be) when you can have a sterile and generic score like one Brian Tyler can, has and will seemingly continue to deliver.
I am so so disappointed with this choice. What a wasted opportunity. We’re talking about the sequel to the 3rd most successful film of all time! Let that sink in for a moment. Marvel/Disney has more than enough money to afford ANY composer they’d like. A composer the likes of Christophe Beck, Michael Giacchino, David Newman or Hans Zimmer would have been an ideal choice, but instead they go out and get Brian “Nickelback” Tyler. Tyler is the poor man’s go-to to get the job done when you don’t want to spend the money but want a sufficient score. It’s no secret that Marvel love to skimp on the costs anywhere they can so we shouldn’t be too surprised by this, but darn it, I am! Ideally, for me, Christophe Beck would have gotten the job. However, I would have been fine with any number of any composers – but not Tyler. This, and I can’t believe I’m about to say it, is a step back from Silvestri. Nothing is memorable, heart wrenching or really emotional about Tyler (or a lot of Marvel films for that matter) scores. This sucks.
Long live mediocrity.
There’s not been a single excellent Marvel score yet. IT’s not only their unfitting choices of composers (you know, they haven’t exactly always been hiring untalented people), it’s also that these films are almost exclusively terrible and not inspiring — not a lot for a composer to work with.

Though I would have enjoyed Alan Silvestri at the helm on the music aspect (I liked his work on Avengers, although it was a bit dull sometimes), Brian Tyler’s actually a good choice, I feel like he’s been improving (having tripped sometimes) over these past years, and like said above, it would be nice to have some continuity with the music like in the x-men films (not that it’s a good piece of work, just an example), with themes to the new Thor (which wasn’t that great but the music just boosted the entire film) and Iron Man (which is not exactly known for great scores), so I’m not exactly worried.
If it had been Zimmer…well, THEN I would have been worried. In the (not so) amazing spiderman 2, the music was F*CKING HORRIBLE, if it was for a cartoon, then it would’ve been fine, but it wasn’t the case; I think his last good work was Sherlock Holmes. I get it, the man has done so many movies that he’s reaching an impasse (if he’s not there already) which is, completely natural, Tyler will get to that spot too in some time.
Really great article, I enjoyed reading, thanks so much for the amazing content.
