Rob Simonsen revealed in a recent interview with Sound on Sight that he is currently scoring the indie coming of age comedy Chu and Blossom. The film is directed by Gavin Kelly and Charles Chu and stars Chu himself, as well as Ryan O’Nan, Melanie Lynskey, Alan Cumming, Mercedes Ruehl, Caitlin Stasey, Annie Potts, Chris Marquette, Dan Bakkedahl and Richard Kind. The movie centers on a pensive Korean exchange student and a performance artist who are trapped together in a small town. Chu has also written the screenplay with O’Nan who is also producing the project with Jason Michael Berman, Caroline Connor, Thomas B. Fore. Simonsen has previously scored the drama Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best directed by O’Nan and produced by Berman, Connor and Fore.Chu and Blossom is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere later this year.
Simonsen has recently scored two movies that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The Way, Way Back starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell, AnnaSophia Robb, Allison Janney and Amanda Peet was picked up by Fox Searchlight as the biggest sale at the festival. The composer’s other film The Spectacular Now starring Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was acquired by A24 Films. Both movies are expected to be released this summer.
