Composer Carter Burwell (Carol, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Twilight, The Blind Side, Being John Malkovich, The Banshees of Inisherin, Anomalisa, In Bruges, Three Kings) is reteaming with director Joel Coen on the upcoming feature Jack of Spades. The film starring Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville takes place in the “atmospheric Scottish Highlands” and is being described as a “sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal.” Coen also co-wrote the screenplay with Eleanor Catton (Emma, The Luminaries), Ethan Coen and Conor McPherson (Artemis Fowl, Saltwater) based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. He is also producing the project with Robert Graf (Battle of the Sexes, Bombshell), Frances McDormand, Indian Paintbrush’s Steven Rales (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom) and Blueprint Pictures’ Graham Broadbent & Pete Czernin (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, All of Us Strangers). Burwell has previously scored Joel Coen’s 2021 solo directorial debut The Tragedy of Macbeth and also composed the music for most movies directed by Joel & Ethan Coen, including Fargo, True Grit, Blood Simple, The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona and Burn After Reading. Netflix has picked up distribution rights for Jack of Spades and will release the movie in select theaters next fall before premiering on the streaming platform.
Burwell’s other recent projects include Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, which premiered at this year’s Venice Film Festival and will in theaters this Friday, November 6 by Searchlight Pictures.
